Chairman of the Presidential Council (PC), Fayez Sarraj, has praised the role of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in reaching a permanent ceasefire agreement in Libya saying it will stop the bloodshed, lift the suffering of Libyans, and pave the way towards the success of the economic and political tracks.

The PC's head remarks came during his statement to mark the anniversary of the liberation of the country from Gaddafi's grip on October 23, 2011.

In his statement, Sarraj reiterated commitment to building a modern civil state. "There is no turning back, there is no place for the military rule in the country," he stressed, calling on all to promote reconciliation and consensus to end the political division.

He also called for accelerating steps towards holding parliamentary and presidential elections, which "would end the legitimacy crisis that has exhausted the country", as he put it.

Sarraj expressed his appreciation for the UNSMIL's efforts "to achieve peace based on justice" with guarantees to stave off the specter of war and unrest in the country.

However, he did insist that those involved in crimes, planting mines, and mass graves must be held accountable, in a clear reference to Haftar and his militias.

The UNSMIL announced on Friday the signing of a permanent ceasefire agreement with immediate effect in all areas of the country between the two Libyan delegations to the 5+5 joint military committee, calling it a ''historic'' result and turning point towards peace and stability in Libya.
