The UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salamé, received Tuesday the final report on the consultative phase of the Libyan National Conference process.

UNSMIL said on its website that the report, which was prepared by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), presents the findings of the nationwide public consultations which took place from April to July 2018.

"The report’s conclusions will form the foundation of the upcoming National Conference." UNSMIL said.

It added that overall, 77 peaceful public consultation meetings were convened across all segments of Libyans society in more than 40 locations all over Libya, as well as with many groups resident abroad.

"Over 7.000 Libyans participated, either physically in the consultative meetings or via digital platforms such as the conference’s website and Facebook pages, while millions of others followed the process through social or traditional media." The UNSMIL explained.

The UNSMIL indicated that the document highlights the main points of consensus reached during the consultation meetings and demonstrates the unity that exists between Libyans on key issues relating to their government, security and defence, as well as the direction they want their country to take.

UN envoy, Salame, said that this report is the culmination of a truly inclusive and transparent process which has been central to shaping my views of the situation in Libya.

“The principles it outlines can be the building blocks of a national deal to help bring Libya out of its current crisis.” He added.

UNSMIL said Salame intends to share the report’s key findings with the UN Security Council during his 8 November briefing, adding that a full version of the report will be made public following the briefing.

The Libyan National Conference has been launched by the UNSMIL as part of the UN action plan to end the crisis in Libya.
