The Head of the UNSMIL, Ghassan Salame, and his Deputy for Political Affairs Stephanie Williams met Wednesday with AFRICOM Commander, General Stephan Townsend, and US ambassador to Libya Richard Norland in Tunis.

UNSMIL said on Twitter that Salame had briefed the commander on on-going dynamics and prospects for a resumption of the political process.

"All of the attendees of the meeting agreed that a political settlement is the only way forward to prevent Libya’s insecurity to prevail.” UNSMIL said.

On Tuesday, the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj met with the new commander of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) Stephan Townsend, accompanied by the new U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland in the Tunisian capital.

AFRICOM said in a statement that discussions included the security environment, the importance of addressing the existing violent extremist organization threat, and the need to resolve the conflict in Libya.

Meanwhile, Al-Sarraj reiterated that his government is going to continue defending Tripoli against Khalifa Haftar's forces in their quest for military rule instead of a civilian state that ensures security and stability for all Libyans, stressing the need to continue cooperation with the US in all fields, especially fighting terrorism.
