The Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) said Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi had submitted documents for his candidacy for Libyan presidential elections at Sabha Electoral Management Office, saying Gaddafi had provided all necessary documents for the process as per the law issued by the House of Representatives.

The HNEC said Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi had received his electoral card from Sabha.

Despite the fact that Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi is accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, but he can run for president as per the elections law issued by the House of Representatives which says that only those who were convicted with a final verdict for crimes are excluded from participating in elections.

The Libyan Supreme Court ruled in last May annulled the verdict against Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and canceled Tripoli Criminal Court ruling of execution against him that was made in 2015, ordered a retrial which hasn't happened yet. International Criminal Court also said Saif's arrest warrant is still valid and hasn't changed status since 2011.
