The Mayor of Sabah, Alshawish Abdulsalam Gerbal, held several meetings lately with UN officials, regarding the situation in the south in general and in the region's capital Sabha.

Gerbal spoke on Monday, with the Acting Head of the UNSMIL, Stephanie Williams, and briefed her on the situation in Sabha and the challenges faced by the municipality.

Williams indicated that the discussions with Sabha's mayor were fruitful and pledged to set up a meeting between the UN team and Fezzan mayors to support the initiative of establishing a Fezzan Municipalities Council, according to the UNSMIL.

Gerbal also met on Tuesday, with the UNDP Resident Representative in Libya, Gerardo Noto, in which they discussed the UNDP's support for the local authorities, primarily in the water and sanitation service delivery, also in the health and education areas.

The meetings came after the Government of National Accord (GNA) accepted the recent court decision to reinstate Sabha’s elected council.
