The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday that setting deadlines for elections in Libya is counterproductive.
In a meeting in Rabat with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, Lavrov added that the political players in Libya need to agree first on a political solution to end the country’s conflict and then carry out elections.
“We have repeatedly highlighted the counterproductive character of setting deadlines in Libya,” Lavrov told reporters after talks in Rabat ended.
He added that Libyans needed to agree first on the “rules of the game” for elections.
The comments cast more doubts on whether Libya can hold parliamentary and presidential - or either - elections by June as sought by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
