Chairman of Presidential Council Fayaz Sarraj vowed Thursday to take action to ease the suffering of illegal migrants in Libya, saying his government is working with all regional and international organizations to end their suffering and help them return to their countries.

Speaking in a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, Sarraj said the numbers of migrants in the country are “shocking”.

“We are talking about 500,000 migrants outside the detention centers and 20,000 in the 40 centers run by the Interior Ministry." Sarraj declared.

"Some African countries began to organize flights to repatriate their citizens and we are very open and cooperative with these countries," Sarraj said, adding that his government has also agreed with Rome to set up repatriation offices in the detention centers.

Later last month, Sarraj told the African Union- European Union Summit in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, that Libya is a victim of human trafficking, slamming the reports about slave markets in the country as implausible and irrelevant to the Libyan culture and principles.

Fayez Sarraj arrived in the German capital of Berlin on Wednesday evening after wrapping up his trip to the USA.
