Vice-President of the Presidential Council Abdullah Al-Lafi stressed the need to conduct the elections within a legal and constitutional framework as a battle over the voting laws raises doubts on the success of the process.
"It is necessary to conduct the elections in accordance with a legal and constitutional framework that ensures the success of the elections and that the outcomes are accepted by all political parties, Al-Lafi said at a meeting with the Assistant Secretary-General and Coordinator of the UN Support Mission in Libya Rizdon Zeninga.
The PC vice-president said this would end the transitional stages that have overburdened the country politically, economically, socially, and at the security level.
He also praised the 5 + 5 Committee's achievements of reaching a ceasefire agreement, opening the coastal road, and exchanging detainees from both sides, in addition to the recent Geneva talks, which addressed the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya.
Al-Lafi explained to the UN delegation that a comprehensive solution to the current situation calls for urgent steps to fulfill the existing requirements and ensure the electoral process goes ahead as scheduled.
For his part, Zeninga stressed the mission's keenness to hold the elections on time, with the consensus of all concerned parties, praising the crucial role of the Presidential Council in supporting the smooth conduct of the electoral process, "which ensures the transfer of power among figures agreed upon by Libyans.
