The US ambassador and special envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, said on the US embassy Facebook page Thursday that he was encouraged by the House of Representatives Speaker, Aqila Saleh’s, commitment to December elections during his first meeting since he became special envoy.

"His leadership will be essential to provide the constitutional and legal basis for elections on December 24.” Norland said about Saleh.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives said in a statement that Saleh and Norland discussed in Cairo the latest developments in Libya and international as well as national efforts to implement the roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

The statement said they also reiterated the need to hold elections on time on December 24, adding that Norland stressed that the House of Representatives is the only entity entitled to approving a constitutional basis for elections and the budget for the government.
