Speaking to a mass crowd at the Martyrs Square on Friday, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah stressed that the polls scheduled for December 24 should not be postponed.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered at the Martyrs Square of Tripoli Friday evening to demand the overthrow of the House of Representatives (HoR) that withdrew confidence from Dbeibah's government three months in advance of planned national elections.

The PM posed for selfies and greeted his supporters as he made his way to the stand to deliver his speech.

"Your presence today is the strongest message that Libya is one. Turn the tables on everyone who does not want the best for Libya," Dbeibah told the cheering crowd.

"You are the centerpiece, your voice is important, your voice has been heard... we cannot leave Libya in the hands of some spoilers," he added.

Dbeibah vowed that his government would not allow the country to slip backward. "Holding elections on time is an irreversible necessity, to preserve the unity of Libya, end division and fragmentation, and stop wars."

On Friday, Tripoli and other Libyan cities witnessed mass demonstrations to denounce the HoR's decision that withdraw confidence from the Government of National Unity (GNU), which primary mission is to get the country ready for December elections.

Dbeibah framed the demonstrations as a message of strong support for Libya's unity and rejection of division, indicating that his government's line has always been "No to war, yes to peace and development, support for youth and state facilities."

He urged Libyans to tolerate and overcome differences to bring the homeland to safety, vowing to build a unified army loyal above all to God and then the flag far from the interests of a person or tribe.
