The head of UN- proposed Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, met Saturday with the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salame, who arrived at Mitiga Airport on his first official visit to Libya.
In a joint press conference with Al-Sarraj, Salame said the UNSMIL will begin to return to the Libyan capital Tripoli gradually, in stages.
"The UN mission in Libya was forced to leave Tripoli in 2014, and I am pleased to inform the Government of National Accord today that we are gradually returning to Tripoli," Salame said.
"I am pleased to be next to the Libyan people and we want to inform you that we are here with the Libyan people, so that the coming months will be a year of peace and stability for a united independent Libya.” He added
For his part, Al-Sarraj said that his government is ready to provide all the support for the UN mission, wishing the new envoy success in his mission. He called on all parties to cooperate fully with Salame and to help complete this transitional period.
Al-Sarraj also requested the United Nations to provide the necessary technical and logistical support so that the presidential and legislative elections proposed next year can be successful, hoping that this path will mirror the popular consensus to get the country out of the current crisis and on to the stage of building a stable Libya.
During his Tripoli visit, Salame also met with the President of the High Council of State Abdulrahman Suweihli. He is scheduled to fly to Tobruk later in the day to meet with the President of the House of Representatives Aqila Saleh and members of the House of Representatives, according to AFP.
