The National Council for Civil Liberties and Human Rights in Libya (NCCHR) has issued a statement regarding the phenomena of illegal immigration, in which it referred to the growing pressure from external parties on Libya, especially from the European Union, and its impact on the security, economic, and social situation in the country.
Libya did not sign the 1951 Geneva Convention, but this does not excuse it from complying with basic protection standards according to international law, says the council.
Signing the Geneva agreement will cause dramatic changes in the demographic structure by making Libyans a minority in their homeland, which creates implications in demographic change, the statement read.
The council considered the work of the UN organization (UNHCR) in Libya illegal because the country did not sign the Geneva Convention in 1951 and accused the UNHCR of exploiting the weakness and challenges that the state institutions face.
The NCCHR called on the government to prepare a unified speech and vision in order to deal with this issue at the local and international levels.
