Lawyers of Libyan families who are suing Khalifa Haftar in US courts for allegedly committing war crimes and torture in Libya intend to ask the court to issue a verdict in absentia and convict Haftar after the latter refused to attend an interrogation session on Monday.
The head of the Democracy and Human Rights Foundation Emadeddin Muntasser said on Sunday that Haftar will not attend the interrogation session scheduled for Monday, May 9 in the federal court in Virginia.
"After the lawyers of the plaintiffs refused the defendant's request to postpone the interrogation date scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, the defendant, Khalifa Haftar, informed them that he is not ready to attend the interrogation session, Muntasser wrote on his Facebook account.
Last month, the US district court of Virginia notified Khalifa Haftar of the need to attend hearings scheduled for April 25 in the cases lodged against him by Libyan families in the US.
However, Haftar's counsel asked the plaintiffs' attorney to postpone the interrogation session until May 9 because his client was fasting.
