Commander of the Joint Operations Room in the western region, Major General Osama Joueili has confirmed that Mitiga Airport was attacked on Tuesday, October 22nd at 2.15 am by high-explosive bombs.

"Investigations show that the bombs used in the air raid were US-made and the warplane that carried out the attack is likely to be F-16 fighter jet," Joueili said in a statement issued by the Joint Operations Room on Tuesday night.

"This attack is clear evidence of the direct intervention of the parties supporting Haftar in his aggression on Tripoli after their failure to achieve any progress on the ground despite using mercenaries from several countries," the statement added.

Joueili urged the United Nations mission in Libya to fulfil its primary mission of supporting the legitimate government and to prevent attacks from regional countries instead of holding "suspicious" meetings with parties responsible for Libya's tragedy.

Mitiga airport was hit by two airstrikes early Tuesday without causing any casualties.
