The Misrata Security Directorate (MSD) has denied releasing any statement identifying the perpetrators in the case of the assassination of the mayor of Misrata, Mohamad Eshtiwi.

The MSD noted in a statement issued on Saturday that it is not responsible for any names that are currently being circulated on social network sites and media outlets, warning people of spreading such rumors.

The MSD also announced that it was not responsible for any statement published by any person from outside the directorate.

Local media have attributed to what they described as official sources from the MSD, saying that one of the suspects in the case of the assassination of Eshtiwi had surrendered himself to the security authorities in the city and is now under investigation.

The director of MSD, Brigadier General Tariq al-Faqih, resigned last week on charges of obstructing the investigation into the assassination.

Unidentified assailants shot and killed the Mayor Mohamad Eshtiwi on the 17th of December, and his body was thrown next to the Safwa Hospital in the city.
