The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has met with Khalifa Haftar, whose forces have been leading an offensive against Tripoli trying to seize power from the Government of National Accord for 11 months, in Berlin, according to a spokesman at the German government.
Tye spokesman said on Tuesday that Chancellor Angela Merkel told Haftar that the military solution wouldn't be viable in Libya.
Merkel and Haftar discussed the ongoing conflict in Libya, reiterating that the ceasefire progress in the political talks as per Berlin conference conclusions are very significant for Libya.
The meeting in Berlin follows a meeting for Haftar and French President Emmanuel Macron, who discussed with the former a way out of the oil blockade entanglement provided that Haftar lifts the blockade in return for fail revenues' distribution outside the Libyan Central Bank, according to Le Monde.
Haftar's forces have been violating the ceasefire since its announcement in January with intensified shelling in civilian neighborhoods and Mitiga Airport, causing a number of civilian deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, on February 12, the UN Security Council unanimously approved a British resolution that supports Berlin conference conclusions on Libya, which include a call for a permanent ceasefire. Russia, Haftar's military supporter, abstained from voting for or against the resolution at the time.
