The Presidential Council's (PC) Head, Muhammad Menfi, and the US Ambassador/Envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, stressed on Saturday the need to maintain calm at this stage during a phone call to discuss the recent developments in Libya.
A statement by the PC said the two sides reviewed the political and security situation, including Friday's riots that broke out in several cities in the country.
Norland expressed the US concern at these developments and acknowledged that the political, economic, and financial stalemate led to the "turmoil" on Friday.
Both reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining security while emphasizing the right of the Libyan people to demonstrate peacefully and express their demands with respect to holding general elections and ending the transitional stages.
Ambassador Norland cautioned that any effort to impose a unilateral solution will result in violence, saying that no political entity enjoys legitimate control across the entire country.
"Only dialogue and compromise among the key figures will identify a path to elections and political stability," the US ambassador tweeted.
He welcomed the PC's efforts in calling for such compromise, and urged Libyan political leaders and their foreign backers to seize the opportunity to restore the confidence of Libyans in the country's future.
