Libyan journalists from various cities gathered in Tripoli on Sunday to choose the first founding committee of the Journalists Syndicate in the presence of observers from the Libyan Workers Union.

According to the Libyan Institution for Investigative Journalism, the committee includes nine journalists representing different regions and media institutions.

Their mission is to prepare the draft statute of the union and the charter of honor, set the electoral schedule, and prepare for their conduct, provided that none of its members take part in those elections.

The members are obliged to complete the tasks assigned to them within a period not exceeding one hundred days since the announcement of its establishment.

The meeting, which was held at Al Andalus Plaza Hotel, Tripoli, was joined by stakeholders concerned with establishing unions for journalists, in Sabha, Benghazi, Ajdabiya, and Tripoli, in addition to representatives of the Free Voices Coalition, which includes civil society organizations concerned with media, freedom of opinion, and human rights.

The observers included the Chairman of the Media Restructuring Committee, the Vice-President of the National Federation of Libyan Trade Unions, and several editors-in-chief of some newspapers.

Sharaf Al-Din Al-Jabrani, Head of the National Federation of Libyan Workers, Tripoli Branch, and Chairman of the Crisis Committee of the National Union of Libyan Workers, Khaled Fadl, also joined the event.
