Municipality Mayors and officials, with the presence of the Second Vice President of the General National Congress, Salah Al-Makhzoum and the Minister of Local Government, Muhannad Younis, held a meeting in Al-Waddan hotel in Tripoli to discuss the political dialogue progress and obstacles.

The Mayors called on, in a statement, the head of the UNSMIL, Bernardino Leon, to be neutral and to avoid taking sides with one party over the other, stressing that they remain strongly supportive for the GNC as the only legitimate authority representing the Libyan people according to the Supreme court’s verdict, which, if ignored, could pose a nightmarish threat to the society.

“The UNSMIL did not play the role it was supposed to, as to help achieve a political solution that can bring about stability and security in Libya, besides, the mission’s negligence and inability to take part in neither the reconciliations nor the prisoners’ exchange, or the humanitarian initiatives as the return of the displaced. Let alone the UNSMIL’s absence in the healthcare works conducted by the municipalities alone.” The statement reads.

The statement included a call for forming a permanent backup team to accompany the GNC’s dialogue team, and another call to unite the efforts, both local and international, to fight terrorism in Libya, urging them to provide vital information that can help bring down those terrorists and never turn a blind eye to their widespread powers, or else they would flourish allowing them to take hold of Libya and all its neighbors.
