A number of checkpoints for the Ministry of Interior of the eastern government in Benghazi came under a barrage of gunfire on Thursday night.

Security sources indicated that at least four checkpoints were attacked by masked gunmen wearing military uniforms and driving “army” vehicles.

One security guard was severely wounded in the shooting.

Local media reports said the gunmen are members of so-called Sahawat (awakening) fighters who are affiliated with Saiqa forces.

The reports indicated that the armed attack came after some of the government buildings they control, were taken by the Interior Ministry. Many government building, especially banks, are still under their control.

The ministry confirmed that four of the attackers were arrested.
