The Deputy Head of the Presidential Council (PC) Ahmed Maiteeq met on Tuesday with the Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio at Farnesina Palace in Rome to discuss the latest developments in the Libyan political scene and bilateral relations between the two countries.

A statement by the Italian Foreign Ministry said that Di Maio affirmed his government's full support for the UN-led Libyan political dialogue aimed at holding presidential and legislative elections in December 2021.

The head of Italian diplomacy stressed the need to accelerate the reconciliation process through a comprehensive and constructive approach that would lead to unified institutions.

He also underscored the importance for all parties to commit to the ceasefire and the implementation of the 5+5 military committee agreement to withdraw mercenaries and open the coastal road.

Di Maio expressed his country's categorical rejection of all forms of external interference in Libya and stressed Italy's interest in strengthening cooperation in the economic and security fields, in addition to the migration file with the review of the bilateral memorandum of understanding signed in this regard in 2017.

It is noteworthy that the PC vise president arrived on Monday in the Italian capital Rome, in which he met with several government officials including, the Italian Interior and defence ministers.
