The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) convened virtually on Wednesday to discuss the constitutional basis devised by its Legal Committee for general elections that are supposed to be held on December 24.

UNSMIL said it chose to feature the meeting for live coverage for transparency, while it's Head, Jan Kubis, opened the meeting with his remarks, saying he trusts that Libyan parties will work together, reiterating the importance of holding elections on time.

Kubis called on Libya stakeholders to commit to the political agreement and the aspirations of the Libyan people, while the rapporteur of the Legal Committee said they had collectively agreed on one of seven proposals for the constitutional basis, hoping that their work would rally international support that would lead to removing foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya.

Legal Committee member, Akram Al-Janin, said the direct or indirect election as well as the dual citizenship of the president candidacy, as well as the constitutional oath of preserving February Revolution constants were the points of disagreement that were left to the LPDF.

Meanwhile, LPDF member, Abdelrahman Al-Sweihli, said there was a need for a new political environment that would allow for the holding of free elections, saying some LPDF members were threatened by certain parties regarding elections.

The LPDF meeting will continue on Thursday and is expected to issue a statement in coordination with the UNSMIL detailing the decision on the constitutional basis that will allow for elections in December.
