The Libyan Presidential Council has expressed bewilderment over statements made by the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in which he accused the Presidential Council's government of being "hostage to militias" and hinted at direct intervention in Libya.

In a statement on Monday, the Presidential Council said despite understanding Egypt's right to defend its national security, "we don't accept any threats to Libyan sovereignty".

"Egypt should play its role in supporting stability in Libya instead of supporting illegitimate armed groups led by a war criminal who launched an offensive against Tripoli." The statement reads.

It called on Egyptian authorities to rethink their role in Libya and to play a more positive one that reflects the history between the two neighboring nations.

On Sunday, El Sisi said in his speech at the World Youths Forum in Sharm el Sheikh that his country should have intervened in Libya directly, adding that Egypt is capable of doing that but has refused to intervene. He added that the internationally recognized government in Tripoli is a hostage to militias.
