The Tripoli-based House of Representatives (HoR) said Sunday that "renegade Khalifa Haftar" is legally and morally responsible for the kidnapping of the HoR member Siham Sirgiwa.

The HoR said it was following closely the development of the kidnap incident and called on all security apparatuses as well as the executive authority departments, elders and civil societies in Benghazi to double their efforts to release her and protect her against any assaults.

"We urge the UNSMIL, Arab Parliament, European Parliament, Maghreb Union, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as well as all human rights and legal agencies to ensure Sirgiwa is freed." The HoR said in a statement.

The House Representatives member was abducted from her house in Benghazi after gunmen had stormed in and shot her husband and assaulted her son.

CNN reported a Sirgiwa family member as saying that more than a dozen masked and armed men arrived at her house at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

"One family member identified the men as part of a militia called the 106th Brigade, also known as Awlia Aldem. They shot her husband in the legs and beat up one of her sons. Both men are still in hospital," CNN reported, according to family members.

Family members also said that as the gunmen left the house, they sprayed graffiti on the walls, including the group's name and a warning in Arabic: "Don't cross the line of the armies."
