The Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj has called for putting an end to the suffering of Libyans as soon as possible, expressing fears that Libya could turn into a proxy war battlefield.

After meeting European Union officials in Brussels on Wednesday, Al-Sarraj said he had fruitful talks with the EU and the Chairman of the European Council.

"After April 04 attack by Haftar's forces on Tripoli, they are still escalating and the international community should take up responsibility for this suffering and stop the aggression on the capital and the legitimate government." Al-Sarraj remarked.

He added that it's clear that Haftar is the attacker and is leading an offensive on the legitimate government that is recognized by the international community. The government, he added, is defending itself and is entitled to making alliances for that, saying his government has the right to sign MoUs and agreements with any other countries.

"We are recognized by the United Nations. We worked in daylight and didn't bring mercenaries from Russia, Janjaweed or Sudan or used the help of drones of regional countries like the other side did." Al-Sarraj added.

An EU delegation with foreign ministers of Germany, Italy, France and the UK were supposed to visit Tripoli on Tuesday but the Libyan Foreign Ministry asked them to put off the visit.
