The Libyan Government of National Unity has issued an ordinance dividing the country into 18 provinces to be governed by a council of mayors from the same range of the area of the districts, operating under the Prime Minister's authority and the direct supervision of the Local Governing Minister.

According to the decision, the provinces are the eastern coast, Jabal Al-Akhdar, Al-Hizam, Benghazi, Al-Wahat, Al-Kufra, Al-Khaleej, Al-Margab, Tripoli, Al-Jafara, Al-Zawiya, West Coast, Gheryan, Zintan, Nalut, Sabha, Al-Wadi, and Murzuq Basin.

Each province includes a Directorate of Security, Health, Education, Transportation, Civil Service, Labor and Rehabilitation, Youth, and Marine Wealth , Agriculture, Livestock, Sport, and Social Affairs.

The province council will be tasked with carrying out their legislation, prepare and implement the budget, make development plans, oversee public policies and implement laws, appoint a police chief, and propose to participate with other districts in the establishment or management of any business.
