The Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala called on the President of the UN Security Council to immediately issue a resolution condemning the "warlord" Khalifa Haftar and his attack on Tripoli, urging him to abide by an effective ceasefire and to return his forces to their previous positions.

In a letter to the Security Council's President, Sayala said Tripoli residential areas saw a night of indiscriminate shelling causing deaths and injuries among civilians, adding that if such a criminal conduct would cause more casualties, destruction of properties and infrastructure and displacement of families if it continues any further.

He also found the "silence" of the Security Council toward the violations by Haftar's forces in Tripoli very strange, calling for a condemnation of Haftar's crimes and an immediate ceasefire.

Sayala also told Libya Al-Ahrar TV Channel that he was in contact with some member states at the Security Council in order to secure a resolution that condemns the "vicious attack on civilians."

He accused Russia of foiling previous attempts at the Security Council to approve a resolution in this regard, adding that some countries agree to a ceasefire in Tripoli but reject naming the attacker or calling on his forces to return to their previous positions.
