The Head of the Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) Emad Al-Sayeh said voter registration is going to be closed inside Libya by the end of Tuesday (August 17) and will be opened for Libyans abroad for 30 days to come, starting Wednesday.

Al-Sayeh said once elections legislations are delivered, candidacy requests will be accepted so that elections can be held on time next December, saying the timeline shall be reshuffled as the HNEC hasn't yet received the legislations.

He also said that online voting wouldn't be possible for December elections, for which about half a million new voters registered so far.

"Online voting isn't easy to monitor and we don't have legislations that secure it. We have 2000 electoral centers, but do they all have network and other technical requirements of the online voting? In the future, if the infrastructure is upgraded, we could have voting online." Al-Sayeh said.
