Identical sources in Benghazi confirmed Tuesday that Benina Airport authorities had prevented citizens from traveling to Tripoli on a flight to Mitiga Airport because they didn't have security clearances after an out-of-the-blue decision in the eastern region that demanded clearances for Libyan travelers to Tripoli.

Several passengers reported being caught by surprise as they got their boarding passes but prevented by security from boarding the plane, adding that the security personnel said westerners can travel but easterners cannot unless they obtain a clearance.

The decision was scrapped later on Wednesday and travelers were allowed on flights to Tripoli without security clearances.

Speaking to reporters, Benina Airport Manager, Abdullah Al-Shafiye, defended the decision saying it was meant for passengers’ protection, but explained that the decision was withdrawn.

A source from Benghazi said that the reason for preventing travelers could be related to hindering about 100 people who are running for parliamentary elections from going to Tripoli to attend a meeting with the Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, who vowed to hold elections in June.
