Senior military officers from the western region of Libya met in the mountain city of Gharyan on Tuesday to discuss rebuilding the Libyan National Army and reactivating the military institution.

The officers of the region from Sirte to the Libyan borders with Tunisia and Algeria has also discussed selecting top commanders for the Libyan National Army.

The Commander of Nafousa Mountain Military Zone Mohammed Shatiba said nominees for the top army positions are expected to be proposed within 10 days.

"A number of army officers from east and south Libya have contacted us and expressed readiness to join our efforts to unite the military institution without loyalties to persons or entities," Shatiba said.

"We want to prove that the Libyan Army is present in the western region; the army has distanced itself from regional and tribal conflicts. The army does not represent cities, tribes, or persons, but it only represents Libya," he added.

On Monday, Libyan Army chiefs from the western and central regions met in Misrata to discuss reformation of the army and the recent clashes in the oil crescent region and takeover of oil terminals by Khalifa Haftar's militia groups.

In the east of Libya, renegade General Khalifa Haftar has formed a self-styled army and appointed himself commander of that army, which is made up of tribal groups, Sahawat fighters, radical Salafists and former regime fighters. The self-proclaimed army is influenced by Egypt and the UAE, and receives support from rebel groups from Sudan and Chad.
