Several Libyan activists, politicians, and academics have called on the UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, to wrap up preparations for the Multaqa Watani (National Conference) and pronounce a date that is not farther than March 01.

In a joint statement, the signatories called on Salame to expand the scope of participation at the conference to include all local leaderships and municipal councils in order to guarantee furtive national results.

"The constitutional declaration and its amendments shall be the basis of any upcoming political work in Libya and a new legislative body shall be elected as per one of General National Congress's laws (2012 and 2014.)" The statement reads.

It adds that they reject replacing the current bodies with the National Conference, rather they call for using it as a way to end chaos and the fighting for power, citing the failure of the Presidential Council's government in providing for Libyans and in protecting Libya's resources, let alone the failure of the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS) in reaching an agreement regarding a government of unity.

They also stressed that their call for the quick announcement of a date for the conference comes after Paris, Palermo and Morocco meetings and conference had proved unsuccessful, besides the failure of other deliberations by the HoR and HCS in The Hague and Cairo - among others.

The statement also criticized the late issuing of a referendum law by the HoR, saying the law was a sham and is done via unlawful constitutional amendment, thus obstructing the process of the constitution's referendum in Libya.
