The Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj said Libya was left alone to deal with the issue of illegal immigration despite being a crossing country not a source one, adding that European countries should do their but as they are the final destination for those immigrants.

In a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi at the headquarters of Libyan mission at the UN in New York, Al-Sarraj said the number of immigrants inside detention centers is less than that of the immigrants moving freely across Libya being easy preys for international human trafficking networks.

"We're working on providing humanitarian assistance to immigrants in detention centres and also shutting a number of them to repatriate some of the illegal immigrants home." He explained.

Grandi hailed the efforts of the Presidential Council in this regard and said UNHCR is ready to assist it to continue its efforts.

Meanwhile, the spokeswoman for the UNHCR renewed lately calls for shutting down detention centers of immigrants in Libya and evacuating them, saying immigrants should not be brought back to Libya if intercepted at sea due to the security challenges in the country.
