Libya and Italy have agreed to form a joint operations chamber that will be tasked with information exchange regarding illegal immigrants.

Following the talks, which were held in Tripoli on Monday between the General Director of the Coast Security Department, Tariq Shanyor, and the Italian Ambassador in Libya, Giuseppe Perrone, the joint room was announced, the media office of the UN-proposed government reported Tuesday.

“The new chamber will activate the previous Italian-Libyan agreements. Libyan security personnel will be in charge of the joint chamber, while Italian ones will be doing the logistic support between the two countries.” The media office added.

It also indicated that several personnel from the Coast Security Department will be sent to Italy and Tunisia for training in the coming few weeks.

The Head of the UN-proposed government’s Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sirraj signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Italian Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, in Rome to step up cooperation between Libya and Italy in the fight of migrant trafficking from Libyan shores, smuggling and securing southern borders.
