Fighters under the command of Khalifa Haftar have murdered the director of security department in Murzuq town in southern Libya, Mohammed Kari, local sources reported.

The sources added that the gunmen stormed into Kari's house on Wednesday and then killed him in cold blood.

They indicated that Haftar's forces also stole the safe of the director from his house before setting it ablaze.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry of the Presidential Council condemned Thursday the "assassination of the director of Murzuq security department by an outlaw group."

It also added in a statement that it denounces all criminal acts against state officials, employees and the security department officials and workers, vowing to bring those involved in such crimes to justice.

Murzuq town saw fierce clashes over the last two days between Haftar's forces and South Protection Force fighters, after which the former entered the town and claimed control before retreating to the outskirts.
