Libya has been elected vice-president of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly that took place on Monday, at the UN HQ in New York.

Libya's Foreign Ministry considered this a victory achieved by intense diplomatic work of the Libyan Foreign Ministry and the permanent UN missions of Libya in New York and Geneva.

The Foreign Ministry also expressed appreciation for the political support provided to Libya by several countries, groups and regional blocs.

"This support resulted in the recent nomination of Libya as a member of the Economic and Social Council and the Human Rights Council," the ministry said on Facebook, referring to Libya's permanent envoy to the UN, Taher Al-Sunni who will be occupying the position.

The Vice-Presidents are elected according to a pattern that ensures equitable geographical representation.

Turkish diplomat Volkan Bozkir is the current president of the 75th session after taking over from Nigeria’s Professor Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, who chaired the outgoing (74th) session.

Those elected as vice president will represent the UN head in the meetings of the General Assembly and will also contribute to managing its meetings and coordinate with the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Security Council in following up the various files that fall under the jurisdiction of General Assembly's president, according to Libya's Foreign Ministry.
