A Tunisian fisherman was wounded on Tuesday when Libyan Coast Guard fired warning shots at illegal fishing vessels in the territorial waters, Libyan Navy has reported.

Spokesman of the Libyan Navy , Brigadier-General Ayoub Qasim, said Coast Guard patrol boats spotted four Tunisian trawlers at dawn, one of them was broken down, off Libya's western coast and ordered them to stop.

"Only one trawler obeyed the orders while the two others attempted to escape," Qasim pointed out, saying warning shots were fired to force them to stop, leaving one of the fishermen wounded.

The Coast Guard has managed to seize the trawlers and directed them to Zawia Port for investigation.

"The wounded fisherman was taken on board a Coast Guard speedboad for treatment," he confirmed.

The number of the fishermen on board the seized trawlers was not given.

The Tunisian defense ministry said it has established contacts with Libyan authorities to secure the release of the seized trawlers.
