Khalid Al-Mishri, a member of Justice and Construction Party and Muslim Brotherhood, won the position of the Head of the High Council of State (HCS) over Abdelrhman Al-Sweihli by 64 votes to 45 in the second round of the elections session that took place in Tripoli on Saturday.
115 votes were cast in the second round, 5 of which were blank with no names on them.
In the first round, four candidates were named: Al-Sweihli, Al-Mishri, Abdullah Jawan and Mohammed Emazeb. Al-Sweihli won it by 37 votes, followed by Al-Mishri by 36, then Jawan by 26 and Emazeb by 17.
Local media said the last few days that there is a tendency at the HCS to eliminate Al-Sweihli and elect Jawan, who could not make it to the second round.
Naji Mukhtar was also elected as first deputy president of the HCS, while Fawzi Aqab was elected as second deputy.
HCS members elected Al-Sweihli in February 2016 as the Head and Saleh Al-Makhzoum as first deputy, while Emazeb was elected the second deputy.
Al-Sweihli was also re-elected as Head in April 2017 by 66 votes against Justice and Construction Party candidate Abdelsalam Ghuwaila who only got 23 votes.
