Italy has welcomed the appointment of Stephanie Williams as Special Adviser for Libya to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.

A statement by the Italian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said that Libya and the international community would both benefit from Williams' vision and experience in this decisive stage.

"The appointment of Stephanie Williams will further strengthen the UN mission's ability to effectively assist Libyan institutions on the ground, to ensure that the Libyan people can choose their representatives without hindrance."

Italy's foreign ministry says that the UN Mission can make a decisive contribution in accompanying the country towards free, fair, and simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, including by leveraging the instruments provided by the Berlin process and supporting inclusive paths of dialogue on political strands, security, economic and humanitarian.

It called on all Libyan parties to cooperate fully and in "good faith" with the new UN Special Adviser and called on all international players, including members of the UN Security Council and the Berlin process, to provide their full support to Williams.

It is noteworthy that the Secretary-General of the United Nations has appointed the former acting UN envoy, Stephanie Williams, as his advisor in Libya.
