Luigi Di Maio

The Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio arrived in Libya's capital Tripoli on Tuesday and met with the Head of Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj, Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala and other officials from the Government of National Accord.

Di Maio hailed in the meeting the ceasefire agreement between Al-Sarraj and the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Tobruk Aqila Saleh, renewing Rome's rejection to foreign intervention in Libya.

Di Maio said Libya "is an important actor to Italy in order to build a new model of development in the region via mutual prosperity and exchange of trade," which he said would benefit all of the region, according to Italian news agency Aki.

Di Maio was scheduled to meet the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Tobruk Aqila Saleh after his meeting with Al-Sarraj.

"Di Maio doesn't want to be part of political strife among politicians on his Tripoli visit, but Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha's imbalanced behavior worries Rome, US and other European countries." Italian media reported.
