The Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio said Tuesday that the focus should be on holding elections on December 24 as per the roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, saying Rome is committed to assisting Libya and that they expect the elections to be free and fair.

His remarks came after his visit to Libya's Tripoli, Benghazi and Tobruk, saying on Facebook that his country's hopes for Libya have somehow been materialized in seeing a national unity government, according to Aki news agency.

Di Maio said Libyan elections will be a new phase for the political process under the auspices of the international community, adding that Italy's support for Libya includes increasing economic exchange and boosting security in the Mediterranean and protecting people against human traffickers and terrorists.

Di Maio visited Libya on Monday and met with the Prime Minister, Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah, Presidential Council's Head, Mohammed Menfi, and the Head of the High Council of State, Khalid Al-Mishri, before going to Benghazi to meet with Khalifa Haftar ahead of attending the reopening of the Italian consulate in there.
