Luigi Di Maio

The Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio said Wednesday, on his visit to Tripoli, that the Head of the Presidential Council of Government of National Accord (GNA) assured him that Rome remains a major partner to Tripoli despite the Turkish presence in Libya.

In a press conference in Rome after he returned from Tripoli, di Maio reiterated that there's no military solution to the Libyan crisis and that only political solutions can end this conflict under conclusive negotiations under the auspices of the UN, according to Aki.

"Libya is a major issue to Italy's security and foreign policies and Rome is going to defend its geopolitical interests now more than ever." He added.

Di Maio said the first meeting for the Libyan-Italian technical commission to discuss the amendment to the MoU signed between the two countries on migration issues will be on July 02, which came after Libyan officials have him Wednesday in Tripoli a number of proposed amendments to the 2017-signed MoU that Italy wants to extend for three more years.

Di Maio told reporters that he had received in Tripoli from Fayez Al-Sarraj a Libyan proposal to reconsider the MoU articles, saying upon first reading, the text seemed fine but more in-depth reading is needed, though it seemed on the right track as to human rights protection as Italy required.
