Italian Defense Minister, Lorenzo Guerini has voiced concern of his ministry, during a recent hearing, about the situation in Libya.

Guerini said that the continued presence of mercenaries and foreign forces in Libya still raises concern for Italian defense policy, as is the case with the new political and institutional stalemate, which could trigger new clashes and conflicts between the different factions on the scene.

During a hearing session of the House and Senate Joint Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees on international missions, Minister Guerini went on to say; “while this country is characterized by instability, our military commitment continues on several fronts, with maritime missions at the national level, and IRINI”.

Guerini described Libya as a real hub for instability and illegal human trafficking coming from the Sahel region.

The minister -a leader of the Democratic Party- stated that the Libyan issue is at the heart of the proactive work of his ministry.

He noted that during his meeting in Ankara recently with his Turkish counterpart, Libya was the focus of attention, explaining that they agreed to explore possible areas of cooperation to support the Libyan armed forces, as soon as conditions allow.
