Security forces foiled an ISIS car bomb attack on Abu Grein checkpoint, some 138 km west of Sirte, on Thursday.

Military sources said security guards of the checkpoint managed to apprehend the ISIS suicide bomber few kilometers before his arrival to the target.

The bomber war driving a black Jeep laden with explosives, the sources added.

The Media Office of Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos Operation has given another account of the incident. It said the bomber surrendered himself to the security guards and admitted he was an ISIS hostage. He claimed that ISIS members instructed him to drive the car to the checkpoint and they will remotely explode it.

The Media Office indicated that the alleged bomber managed to defuse the explosives by “removing the sim card from the detonator cell phone” before surrender.

Meanwhile, the committee tasked with the activation of security services in Sirte announced Wednesday that it had received reports from citizens saying they had passed through checkpoints run by ISIS militants in the Amrah Valley, which is the link between Al-Jufra and Abu Grein road.

The committee demanded that the Presidential Council to take urgent measures to strike the positions of ISIS in the valleys, south of Sirte.

ISIS militants, who withdrew from Benghazi, have resorted to taking refuge in the desert valleys, south of Sirte, and appear from time to time with checkpoints and sudden attacks on the positions of the forces of Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos Operation.

Last August, ISIS released video footage showing its militants setting up a checkpoint in the desert road between Al-Jufra and Abu Grein.
