The Minister of Interior Fathi Bashagha signed on Friday a memorandum of understanding with the Geneva Center for Security Sector Governance (DCAF) to strengthen security sector governance in Libya.

According to the Interior Ministry, the agreement will help the ministry to develop remediation plans in many key areas of its work.

"As part of the comprehensive security sector reform process, the two sides will cooperate in strategic planning and development of reform programs and skills of the ministry's employees and security forces, the ministry explained in a statement on Facebook.

This would be achieved through training courses, seminars, workshops, and by offering regional and international security experts and experiences, in addition to providing best practices of governance in the democratic civil security sector in line with the Libyan state's international legislation and treaties, the ministry added.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the DCAF by the center's Director Thomas Gerber and in the presence of Ayman Ayoub, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Department, Andrea Selino, Head of the North Africa Office at the Center, Archibald Gallet, Director of the Libya Program, and Roberta Maggi, Assistant Department Middle East, and North Africa projects at the DCAF, and Emad Eddin Badi, advisor for Libyan affairs at the center.

The Ministry of Interior said that the DCAF is a leading global institution that works to assist countries and governments in developing and reforming the security sector, with a governing board of representatives from 63 countries, while operating in more than seventy countries across five continents.

The center's essential function is to assist in matters related to security, the rule of law, and development. It also works with other specialized and UN organizations and components, including the UN's political and special missions around the world.
