The Prime Minister of the UN-proposed government, Fayez Al-Sirraj, discussed on Thursday with the Italian Interior Minister, Marco Minitti, the joint cooperation in combating illegal immigration, human trafficking, and spatial development.

The Italian Interior Minister and a delegation of security and interior ministry officials were received in Tripoli by Al-Sirraj in the presence of the Libyan Foreign Minister Moahmmed Sayala and Interior Minister, Aref Al-Khouja, as well as several officials.

Minitti renewed Italy's support for the Presidential Council to achieve stability in the country, hailing the success of the Libyan Coast Guard in rescuing illegal immigrants in the Mediterranean and in combating human smugglers.

"The EU has responded positively to Italy's call for giving more attention to the illegal immigration issue in the Mediterranean and for providing the needed support for Libyan coastguards as well as helping secure Libya's southern borders." Minitti explained.

Both Minitti and Al-Sirraj also reviewed the agreements regarding the training of the Libyan coastguards as well as the support strategy that was devised by the UN-proposed government regarding securing southern borders in Libya.

The Italian Interior Minister also met with several mayors from different Libyan cities - the most damaged ones by human trafficking activities.

The EU had previously agreed - during Al-Sirraj's visit to Rome and Brussels - to support Libya's projects in development to help the damaged municipalities.
