The International Criminal Court (ICC) said it had opened a thorough investigation into accusations directed at the Libyan Coast Guard blaming it for attacks on humanitarian NGOs while doing their jobs in rescuing immigrants off Libyan coasts.

The investigation was prompted by a lawsuit by Sea Watch Organization.

The lawsuit, according to Sea Watch, relies on the events of the May 10th interception of a Sea Watch ship by a Libyan Coast Guard's patrol and then attacked a boat with 500 migrants aboard, forcing them to go back to Libya's shores at gunpoint, then tossing them in unhealthy detention centers.

Sea Watch Organization said that returning immigrants to Libya at gunpoint is a violation of forced return international doctrines.

"Libyan coastguards jeopardized the lives of immigrants and rescuers alike." Sea Watch said in its lawsuit in The Hague.
