The Energy and Natural Resources Committee of the Tripoli-based House of Representatives (HoR) has warned the Libyans and the international community of an even more catastrophic disaster than the one that hit the Port of Beirut, due to the continued closure of oil fields that contain large quantities of ammonium nitrate.

"The ammonium nitrate is stored in large quantities at the ports of Brega, As Sidr, and Ras Lanuf, and any leakage or explosion may lead to a humanitarian catastrophe if an action is not taken soon," the HoR committee said in a statement.

It also emphasized the importance of resuming Libya's oil operations, holding the parties and countries responsible for the closure of the oil facilities the humanitarian, moral, and legal liability of any chemical explosion.

The statement called on the United Nations and its bodies to address the issue before a disaster occurs.
