The Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, reviewed Saturday with the elders and dignitaries of Derna city in eastern Libya the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their houses in the city.

The remarks came during Menfi's visit to Derna as part of his east Libyan tour that started last Tuesday in Tobruk.

Menfi met with Derna mayor Abdelmonem Al-Ghaithi and elders from the city, in addition to military and civil leaderships.

Menfi's visit to Derna is the first for a Libyan high profile official since February 17, 2011, the media office of the Presidential Council said, adding that he also discussed national reconciliation and transitional justice as well as the work of the newly formed national reconciliation commission, in addition to vowing all forms of support to Derna in coordination with the Government of National Unity.

In 2018, Khalifa Haftar's forces seized Derna city by force in a war that killed hundreds of residents and massively destroyed the city's infrastructure, sending over 500 families out in the open to displacement in western region cities.
