The member of the High Council of State (HCS) Ibrahim Sahad said Monday that lifting arms ban on Libya by the UN Security Council will be a green light for countries supporting Khalifa Haftar to provide him with more weapons and military equipment without being held accountable.

Sahad told Arabi 21 newspaper that he was bewildered to hear the Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala calling for lifting the arms ban, calling on the UN Security Council not to respond to this “strange” request.

Sahad added, commenting on Sayala’s call for partial lifting of the ban to help the Presidential Guard of the Presidential Council, that the Presidential Guard has enough weapons to do its job and secure the state institutions as this guard cannot substitute the Libyan army position.

Sayala wanted the UN to exclude some arms and equipment that he said the Presidential Guard as well as the coastguards needed in Libya.

Meanwhile, local and international parties accuse UAE, Egypt and France – among others – of violating UN arms embargo on Libya by providing Haftar’s forces with weapons and with being on the ground for military expertise and in the air for carrying air attacks in different places like Benghazi, Derna and Al-Jufra, besides bombing Libya Dawn forces in August 2014.
