High Council of State (HCS) member Abdul-Rahman Al-Shater, a politician and journalist advocating for a democratic state, has described the meeting held between HCS members and 15 EU ambassadors in Tripoli yesterday as “disappointing.”

Al-Shater said the ambassadors hinted at their approval of UAE meeting between Chairman of Presidential Council Fayez Sarraj and warlord Khalifa Haftar, but when they asked about the details of that meeting, they “shook their heads and left.”

He warned that if the outcomes of UAE-sponsored Sarraj-Haftar meeting were imposed by the UN, it would have negative repercussions.

“A horror film in the works,” he described the upcoming UN-backed National Conference, saying the Libyans, the stakeholders, are unaware of what’s being planned for them.

The meeting of Sarraj and Haftar in Abu Dhabi on February 27 has sparked nationwide controversy as no results were announced.

The Presidential Council said Abu Dhabi meeting was only for consultations, but many sources confirm that there was an agreement and the UN mission in Libya is working to impose it during the next National Conference later this month.

The UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has made conflicting reports about Abu Dhabi meeting. On February 28, the UNSMIL reported that the meeting was held on an invitation from UN envoy Ghassan Salame and that both sides, Sarraj and Haftar, agreed to end the transitional stage and hold new elections.

But on March 10, Salame said in an interview with Libya Alahrar TV that he was only a witness for the meeting. He added that the meeting was held by chance as Sarraj was on a working visit to Abu Dhabi while Haftar was there to undergo medical checkups.
